Our sense of smell is one of the most powerful triggers of memory and emotion. Breathe in the scent of lavender and you may feel yourself begin to unwind, perhaps recalling a childhood garden, or a trip to Provence. It is the classic Proustian moment: a single scent suddenly and involuntarily calls up a distant memory and the feeling attached to it.
Aromatherapy works in a similar way. The physical compounds of lavender trigger a chemical reaction in your brain, forcing your nervous system to relax. Our sense of smell is closely linked to the part of the brain that handles emotion and memory. That is why a scent can so quickly change how we feel or bring a forgotten memory rushing back.
Fragrance plays an important role in wellness rituals because it can inspire a mood, ranging from calming to uplifting. Citrus scents, for example, are associated with high energy, peppermint wakes up your brain, and jasmine can make you feel happy.
Yet our responses to fragrance are deeply personal. What soothes one person may evoke an entirely different memory or feeling for another, depending on past associations. Understand how aromas affect you, and you can use scent intentionally to cue a desired mood with diffusers, candles, bath oils, and room sprays.

At Velvet Spa at Ambiente, a Landscape Hotel, that idea becomes part of the treatment. For travelers seeking a spa hotel in Sedona, Velvet invites guests to create a personal spa story through an intuitive aroma ritual.
Upon arrival, guests are introduced to six scent blends (Earth, Fresh, Mandarin, Oolong, Ore, and Sun) and simply notice which one speaks to them. The chosen aroma is incorporated into the treatment, further personalizing the experience.
Deborah Waldvogel, Spa Director at Velvet, explains, “We have chosen scent blends from ZENTS rather than traditional essential oils. I have known the founder of the company for over 20 years, and his story and the collections he has created are really remarkable.”
ZENTS grew out of founder Cord Coen’s own healing journey. After a serious car accident left him with chronic pain and an impaired sense of smell, time spent exploring holistic practices in India helped shape his belief in the restorative power of scent and inspired ZENTS’ gentler, sensory approach to wellbeing. In regaining his sense of smell, he discovered his sensitivity to scent was dramatically heightened.
Their fragrances are described as “liquid memories,” with aromas inspired by people, places, and experiences. Because fragrance also interacts with an individual’s skin chemistry as well as their own memories and associations, the same blend can feel subtly different from one person to another.
At Velvet, that individuality is part of the pleasure. Guests can choose one scent or combine two to create something entirely their own.
While instinct is often the best guide, knowing a little about each fragrance at Velvet Spa can help you discover what you might be drawn to, and why.

Earth
Strengthening and grounding, Earth is inspired by the mountains and the clean scent of a forest with notes rooted in sandalwood and fir needle topped with bergamot and bay leaf.
Fresh
Soothing and cleansing, Fresh combines delicate linden blossom with crisp cucumber and lemon, softened by musky ambrette and sweet heliotrope. Its fresh-linen quality makes it a natural choice for anyone seeking a sense of renewal.
Mandarin
Warming and invigorating, Mandarin takes its inspiration from the spice markets of Thailand. Notes of freshly ground ginger, nutmeg, and cardamom deliver warmth, refreshed with mandarin, vanilla bean, and saffron.
Oolong
Inspired by the elegance of a Japanese tea ceremony, Oolong blends the bold notes of lime blossom, petitgrain, and bergamot with soothing lavender and oolong tea for a balanced and energizing effect.
Ore
The most sensual of the collection, Ore layers orris and ylang ylang with bay laurel, black pepper, and clove. Euphoric and stimulating, it is an aroma for those drawn to something bolder.
Sun
Comforting and calming, Sun captures the sensation of golden hour in fragrance form. Vanilla, sandalwood, and amber are brightened with blood orange and grapefruit, creating a scent that helps melt away stress.

For some guests, the decision is immediate. For others, choosing a fragrance becomes a small ritual in itself.
“If they are undecided between two of them, the beauty of this particular collection is that the scents mix wonderfully together, so we can combine two to create a very unique blend for the guest,” says Waldvogel. “Some guests select quickly, and others really take their time trying to decide. It is an interesting process to observe.”
That hesitation may actually be part of the experience. Instead of choosing what sounds appropriate on paper, guests have an opportunity to pay attention to what feels appealing at that particular moment. Someone who normally gravitates toward citrus might suddenly prefer sandalwood and amber; another guest expecting to choose something floral may find herself drawn to spice or forest notes.
At Velvet, one of the best spas in Sedona AZ, guests create their own sensory story, often as part of a holistic wellness retreat, and take the memory of the experience with them in the form of a vial of their chosen fragrance.
“It’s a way to remind them of the transformational time they shared with us here,” says Waldvogel.
Scent can become a powerful reminder of a place and a feeling. Just as a fragrance from the past can unexpectedly return us to a particular moment, deliberately associating an aroma with a restorative treatment can give it personal significance long after the experience itself has ended.
Used afterward, before bed, during a quiet bath, or simply when a moment of calm is needed, the aroma helps to induce that feeling and reconnect with your time at Velvet.
When choosing among aromatherapy scents at home, begin by smelling each scent slowly. Notice what appeals to you. Pay attention to any memories, emotions, or physical sensations that may come up.
Sometimes, your nose already knows what you need.
